There is a captivating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling hall gambling is banned. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime area, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 17:00, and though visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of most borders.

The 1st Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship casino, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 96 table games, including 87 punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational resort and hotel building that highlights a number of luxuries on top of the gambling hall, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight table games.
